399 Clermont Ave

If you walk north from Prospect Heights along Vanderbilt Avenue, you’ll soon find yourself on the quaint, tree-lined streets of Fort Greene’s historic district. This cozy neighborhood is one of the most pleasant areas in all of Brooklyn. With its smaller streets made up of mostly brownstones and other pieces of older architecture, Fort Greene feels a lot like an uncramped, more spacious version of the West Village, especially along Clermont Avenue. This is one of those neighborhoods that feels incredibly comfortable, and that’s what makes this area shine. Fort Greene is one of the most welcoming of all areas in Brooklyn.

Among the historic facades of the even more historic neighborhood lies 399 Clermont Avenue, a newly renovated boutique brownstone built in 1931, back when Brooklyn was still experiencing rapid growth. While it might have been recently restored, the building retains its original early twentieth century style and continues to fit perfectly into its surroundings. It has a beautiful newly-renovated interior which harkens back to its historic roots and gives new life to an otherwise aging building while carefully respecting its original beauty and craftsmanship.

Life in Fort Greene

Fort Greene is a really fun and unique neighborhood. It has close access to Downtown Brooklyn and Manhattan but feels more like its own smaller city. In a way, it reminds me of the area surrounding Yale University—great atmosphere, beautiful surroundings, great food. And Fort Greene certainly has some great food options. Among the nearby restaurants is the highly-rated Aita, which serves its popular authentic Italian dishes. They have a great vintage aesthetic giving them a rustic but elegant atmosphere.

Italian not your style? You’re in luck! There are quite literally dozens of options to choose from just within walking distance. If you’re feeling in the mood for mediterranean, Olea Mediterranean Taverna is a great little neighborhood restaurant with a strong community surrounding it. Thrillist puts it quite simply, “Dining at Olea is easy.”

Designed by the same pair who envisioned Central Park and Prospect Park, the crown jewel of the neighborhood bears the same: Fort Greene Park. Originally Fort Putnam, the grounds were repurposed to serve as a natural sanctuary within the growing borough. The park is a great place to spend some time connected to the natural world with a beautiful lawn and lots of trees.

A great benefit of Fort Greene is its close proximity to Fulton Street and Lafayette Ave. These allow for quick easy access to several subway lines within walking distance. Downtown Manhattan can be reached in as little as twenty minutes, making this a perfect location for anyone who has a regular commute in either direction. With nearby Atlantic Terminal, there is even a quick connection to the LIRR. If you are wary of public transportation these days, Fort Greene is a really practical neighborhood to drive from and find parking in thanks to its small size and close proximity to popular areas.
