Welcome to 1332 Bergen Street!

1332 Bergen Outside View

Built in 1910, this Crown Heights building located at 1332 Bergen Street has an interesting and unique history as the former home of Colonel William Hemstreet. Hemstreet served as a staff officer at the end of the Civil War before returning to New York. In his post-war years, he became a well-known scholar, lawyer and lecturer, while also serving as the legal stenographer for the County Court of Brooklyn for 35 years. He also sat on the board of the Brooklyn Institute of the Arts, known today as the Brooklyn Museum, and played a role in shaping the city as it grew in the early twentieth century. Hemstreet’s family would live in the building until around 1920.

Today the building is in beautiful condition, having just been renovated to accommodate modern livability while retaining its historic style. It has twelve brand new units available, each of which has been designed to maximize space as well as comfort. These vary from studio to two bedroom apartments. Every unit has a brand new, state-of-the-art kitchen with an included microwave, dishwasher and standard fixtures of the highest quality. The architects have done a fine job once again of combining the historic beauty of the building with the tasteful design subtleties of modern spaces. The units have all been crafted to excel in both practicality and aesthetic appeal using lots of natural lighting and open, spacious rooms. No space is wasted in this efficient-but-elegant design.

You’ll be able to sleep easy knowing that you’ll find your bike where you left it—and intact. If you have a beloved feline or canine companion, fear not!
